5 Fall Tree Care Tips for New Jersey Homeowners

5 Fall Tree Care Tips for New Jersey Homeowners

Fall tree care, before the cold winter months.

“While your trees seem to be in a state of hibernation in the winter, being exposure to the tough conditions can cause them major stress,” says Eugene Brennan of Brennan’s Tree Service from Vauxhall, NJ. “Minimize stress by helping your trees through the cold months. If you take care of your trees in the winter, you’ll be rewarded in the spring.”

Brennan’s Tree Service recommends the following tips for preparing trees for winter weather:

Mulch

Put composted organic mulch under your tree in the fall or early winter to help retain water and reduce temperature extremes in the soil. A thin layer of mulch will act like a blanket and give the tree’s roots a little extra protection.

Watering

Give your trees a drink. Winter droughts require watering as much as summer droughts. If temperatures allow, an occasional watering during the winter on young trees can be a lifesaver. Be sure to water when soil and trees are not frozen.  Brennan’s Tree Service recommends water on the first day of two days of warmer weather.

Mechanical Injuries

Branch breakage or splitting can be caused by ice and snow accumulation or chewing and rubbing by animals. You may prevent problems with young trees by wrapping their base in a hard, plastic guard or a metal hardware cloth. Wrapping trees with burlap or plastic cloth also can prevent temperature damage. However, it is important to remember to remove the wraps and guards in the spring to prevent damage when the tree begins to grow. Other damage can be caused when plowing or shoveling snow. Damage to limbs and trunks from plow blades or a sharp shovel can be detrimental to trees.

Pruning

Fall is a good time to prune your trees. Not only are trees dormant in the colder months, but it is also easier to see a tree’s structure when there are no leaves on the branches. Proper pruning is vital to the health of trees and plants, in part because it helps relieve stress on trees and keeps them growing.  Just be aware that each tree is different, and pruning at the wrong time or way can injure a tree making it more susceptible to limb or tree failure.

Pruning back your trees also helps your larger limbs to survive those wet winter snow.  “Last, winter the emergency tree service calls came in quite a bit after wet snow storms.” Eugene explained.

Plant a Tree

Since autumn is the time of year for colorful, falling leaves, many people do not realize that it is also a prime time to plant new trees. After cooler weather has set in, conditions are perfect for stimulating root growth in new trees. Once roots are established throughout the fall and dormancy of winter, spring showers and summer warmth encourage new top growth.  Fall is the optimum time to plant balled and burlapped trees. However, all bare root plants should be planted later in the season, when they are completely dormant.

When Big Trees Fall

Wow!

Is all I can say about some of the calls we get.  People frantic, crying and in a crisis.  At times it feels like I am a 911 emergency operator.

This spring we have seen some severe damage caused by trees that is gut wrenching to homeowners.  When we get there, we have to assess the damage, calm the homeowner and get logistics in order to safely remove a tree, that is wedge in with other trees, crushing a homes roof, tangled in electric wires and crossing a property line.

Assessing the Tree Damage

When Eugene gets a call and arrives at a big tree removal.  The first thing he needs to do is assess the how he can safely remove the tree.  Some key tasks are:

Property Damage

Making sure that no more damage is caused by this unstable falling tree.

Safety Procedure

How can this tree removal be done safely to the property and workers.

Utility Conflicts

Most often the trees fall into cable, electric and phone lines.  Care must be given to underground utilities like gas, water and sewer when the entire root system is pulled from the ground when the tree collapsed.

Logistics Scheduling

Manpower, weather and equipment need to be scheduled. If a crane is going to be used for the tree removal, this has to be scheduled.  Bucket trucks and climbing gear are needed to remove those large limbs dangling over windows, cars and other parts of the house or property.  Chippers and stump grinders need to set up to remove the trees limbs and branches and after the tree is removed, the stump ground safely.

Calming the Homeowner

Imagine sleeping at night and hearing the crackle, the snapping of a large tree in your front yard.  The crashing and thud of the tree is echoing through your house.  But, you didn’t feel the shaking, that you thought you would.  You get up to find the tree, your tree crashed down on your neighbor’s home.

What do you do?  Who do you call?

The first thing is check on the neighbors to make sure they are safe.  Don’t do ANYTHING to the tree or area surrounding it. Electric lines, gas lines and a host of other DANGERS may be present.
