7 Reasons for Spring Tree Care Services in Short Hills, New Jersey

The robins have arrived and Spring is only days away.  The winter wasn’t to bad this year in Short Hills,  but it is that time again to have your tree’s cared for.  Here are 7 Reasons to care for your trees now.

  1. Get your trees pruned before the birds build their nests.  As nature lovers, we hate to disturb any wildlife.  By getting your trees pruned early (Before the end of April) we can get the limbs pruned back, trees in a nice beautiful shape and structurally healthy.  Plus, the birds will build their nests on healthier branches.
  2. Clear out those dead branches.  Nothing worse than seeing a tree full of leave…accept for that one spot.  Or that big dead branch among the leaves.  Ready to crash down with any summer storm.
  3. Get those trees pruned before the bugs arrive.  Insect damage on trees can kill the tree in a matter of a year or two.  By getting the limbs cut back now, the tree has time to heal over and not attract the bugs of summer.
  4. Savings and faster service.  Most tree services are a little slow in the spring as people assess their properties.  By getting your trees cared for in the early Spring, you can get an opening in their schedule easier and normally at lower prices.  Think supply and demand.
  5. Get the full bloom of your trees, by cutting out the older branches that are more likely to grow more branches and less budding blooms.
  6. Get your trees shaped so when the leaves come in the summer, your tree has that perfect shape and adds plenty of curb appeal or a nice looking tree to look at from the back patio on a warm Summer’s eve.
  7. Save your tree.  Over the winter trees go through a lot of stress.  Rain gets into cracks and crevices and then freezes.  Expanding and doing damage to the structure of big limbs and split trunk trees.  The value of a large beautiful tree on your property is priceless.  A 40 year old oak can’t be replaced.

So there you have it.  Seven good reasons to have your trees cared for this Spring.

5 Fall Tree Care Tips for New Jersey Homeowners

5 Fall Tree Care Tips for New Jersey Homeowners

Fall tree care, before the cold winter months.

“While your trees seem to be in a state of hibernation in the winter, being exposure to the tough conditions can cause them major stress,” says Eugene Brennan of Brennan’s Tree Service from Vauxhall, NJ. “Minimize stress by helping your trees through the cold months. If you take care of your trees in the winter, you’ll be rewarded in the spring.”

Brennan’s Tree Service recommends the following tips for preparing trees for winter weather:

Mulch

Put composted organic mulch under your tree in the fall or early winter to help retain water and reduce temperature extremes in the soil. A thin layer of mulch will act like a blanket and give the tree’s roots a little extra protection.

Watering

Give your trees a drink. Winter droughts require watering as much as summer droughts. If temperatures allow, an occasional watering during the winter on young trees can be a lifesaver. Be sure to water when soil and trees are not frozen.  Brennan’s Tree Service recommends water on the first day of two days of warmer weather.

Mechanical Injuries

Branch breakage or splitting can be caused by ice and snow accumulation or chewing and rubbing by animals. You may prevent problems with young trees by wrapping their base in a hard, plastic guard or a metal hardware cloth. Wrapping trees with burlap or plastic cloth also can prevent temperature damage. However, it is important to remember to remove the wraps and guards in the spring to prevent damage when the tree begins to grow. Other damage can be caused when plowing or shoveling snow. Damage to limbs and trunks from plow blades or a sharp shovel can be detrimental to trees.

Pruning

Fall is a good time to prune your trees. Not only are trees dormant in the colder months, but it is also easier to see a tree’s structure when there are no leaves on the branches. Proper pruning is vital to the health of trees and plants, in part because it helps relieve stress on trees and keeps them growing.  Just be aware that each tree is different, and pruning at the wrong time or way can injure a tree making it more susceptible to limb or tree failure.

Pruning back your trees also helps your larger limbs to survive those wet winter snow.  “Last, winter the emergency tree service calls came in quite a bit after wet snow storms.” Eugene explained.

Plant a Tree

Since autumn is the time of year for colorful, falling leaves, many people do not realize that it is also a prime time to plant new trees. After cooler weather has set in, conditions are perfect for stimulating root growth in new trees. Once roots are established throughout the fall and dormancy of winter, spring showers and summer warmth encourage new top growth.  Fall is the optimum time to plant balled and burlapped trees. However, all bare root plants should be planted later in the season, when they are completely dormant.

The Benefits of Getting Your Trees Serviced in the Winter.

  • The trees are dormant

  • You can see the structure of the tree

  • The ground is harder, so the equipment doesn’t impact the yard

  • Discounts on the service

  • Better blooms in the spring

  • In harmony with nature

As your trees lose their leaves in the fall, they are preparing for the long cold winter ahead.  This is a perfect time to have those limbs pruned, trees shaped and in the worst case  trees removed.  This is the time of the year that little impact is done to the trees growth.

The leaves gone now, so it is much easier to shape your trees as all the branch, limb and trunk structure is visible.  All those dead branches, limbs going in wild directions and a balance of trunk/branch/limb sculpting can be easily seen.

With most tree services, heavy equipment is needed.  From bucket trucks, cranes and stump grinders, equipment is needed to do your tree work in a safe and professional manner.  A licensed tree care expert knows how to do the work properly, professionally and with a light impact to other landscapes.  Winter is the best time to get those big trees serviced and for those trees in soft soil or heavily landscaped areas serviced as to not impact the growing season or soft soils.  The last thing you want is rutting or disturbed landscapes.

The winter months are normally a slow time for most businesses and a tree service is no different.  Many will offer discounts to keep their workers busy through the cold months.  Good help is hard to find and most tree services will be willing to negotiate a fair cost on your tree removal or pruning service to keep those good workers working.

Winter tree servicing makes a big difference in your spring blooms.  With the removal of selected branches and limbs, the stored energy your tree has, come spring, really makes the trees have a healthy bloom.  Plus, disease and insect infestation will be almost non-existing.  Bugs are gone and air borne tree diseases are very low.

The winter is the best time for tree service work, because it works in harmony with nature.  There are no birds nesting, squirrels and other tree living animals are hibernating or tucked away for the cold winter days.  There are no young of the year to disturb.  Winter is the perfect time to have your trees serviced if your trees are the playground of birds and small mammals.

Guide to Fall Tree Care

Guide to Expert Tree Care (Fall)

Tree Care Experts New Jersey
Summer growth branches should be pruned back to help your trees survive the snow and ice storms winter brings.

Fall is the time to prepare your trees for the cold months ahead and encourage growth in the spring.

 1) Time to plant new trees:

Fall is the best time to plant new trees . Since temperatures are cooler and there is less chance of stress from the sun, drought or high temperatures, newly planted trees get the chance to get adjusted to their new home, with all the stresses of insects, heat, etc.

Fall is the time to plant new trees.

 2) Fall fertilization:

To help your trees survive the harsh winter, they should be fertilized in the fall.  This help them thrive come spring instead of stunned growth.  In nature, all animals try to put on the pounds to make it through the winter, your trees are no different.  The drop their leaves to conserve energy.  Give them a good feeding before winter sets in.

Spring blooms are so much prettier with a good fall fertilzer.

3) Good watering:

Fall is the season to give your trees plenty of water before the winter months, quenching your trees’ roots.

Watering should be enough to penetrate the top 12 inches of soil.  This is the area your trees need water the most.

If your trees are on higher ground or have no irrigation, a good subsurface water is need going in the winter months.

Well watered trees, have less decay and dead branches come spring.

4) Pruning:

As the leaves drop, you can see the summer growth of new branches.  This is the time of year to trim those branches to make a fuller, healthier looking tree in the spring.

Another thing to consider in when pruning trees in the fall, is the coming snow and ice storms.  Will some of those branches, limbs and split trunks survive?

You should call a New Jersey Certified Tree Expert to have your trees evaluated.
